A super 8 film in a flea market in Mexico City holds the remembrance of news to come. This could be today’s news, but it was 1937: Spain was undergoing a brutal civil war, the worst cloudburst in 27 years struck London, storms and floods were affecting the US, workers in the US lost millions in pay when Government condoned “sit down” labor war, the Golden Gate was opened, Mussolini visited Hitler in Germany, Japan invaded China. We all know the ending of that story. But what if fifty years from now, someone found media of our current news? Would they also feel a cold chill down their backbone? Would they also say we all know how bad that story ended? An AR app switches the content from 1937 to the present, showing that History repeats itself. You think we would know better, but we tend to forget.
Exhibited at NEW INC's showcase at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, at the 2017 SPRING/BREAK Art Show in New York, Smack Mellon, and was presented as one of six curated projects at Art Central Hong Kong 2018. The online version is available at futurepast.news, and is an honoree of the 2017 Webby Awards in the NetArt category. The piece was also shortlisted for the 2018 Lumen Prize.

Um filme super 8 em uma feira de rua na Cidade do México guarda a lembrança de notícias que chegarão. Poderiam ser notícias de hoje, mas era 1937: a Espanha passava por uma guerra civil brutal, a pior tempestade em 27 anos em Londres, chuvas e inundações afetavam os Estados Unidos, trabalhadores nos EUA perderam milhões de dólares quando o governo perdoou disputas de trabalho, a ponte Golden Gate era inaugurada, Mussolini visitou Hitler na Alemanha, o Japão invadiu a China. Todos sabemos o fim dessa história. Mas, e se em cinquenta anos encontrassem as notícias de hoje? As pessoas também sentiriam um frio em suas espinhas? Também saberiam o terrível fim dessa história? Um aplicativo de realidade aumentada troca o conteúdo de 1937 para o presente, mostrando como a História se repete. A gente pensa que seríamos melhores, mas tendemos a esquecer.
Instalação exposta no showcase do NEW INC, New Museum, no SPRING/BREAK Art Show 2017, e no Smack Mellon, todos em Nova Iorque. A versão online está disponível em futurepast.news, e recebeu menção honrosa no Webby Awards 2017 na categoria NetArt. A instalação também foi indicada ao Lumen Prize 2018.
